Puerto Princesa is popularly known as ecotourism city of Philippines. With the total land area of 253, 982 hectares, Puerto Princesa is considered to be the largest city in Philippines. The city is comprised of 31 rural barangeys and 35 urban barangays. The area that is covered with urban barangays is just four perfect of the entire city. The western part of the city is located on the banks of South China Sea where as the eastern part of the city located on Sulu Sea. The city is located 306 nautical miles away from the famous city, Manila and 250 nautical miles away from Panay.
The city was named after a princess Eulalia of Spain, who suffered an untimely death. After her death, the name was changed to Puerto De La Princesa and eventually, it was reduced to Puerto Princesa.
In 1872, Puerto Princesa was recognized as the center for most of the naval operations as the bay area used to handle heavy navy’s requirements. Later in 1894, the town was recognized by Spanish Government as the most beautiful cities in Philippines. In 1970, the town was converted into a city with the efforts kept by Ramon V. Mitra and Jr. R Oliveros, who became the first City Mayor.
The city is considered to be the preferred destination among tourists who love ecotourism. As Ecotourism become a buzz world these days, the inflow of visitors to the city is getting increased day by day. The city has already gained the reputation as ‘The Last Frontier’ in the world.
As numerous of people from various other cities of Philippines and other countries migrated to Puerto princesa, the city has become a platform for multiple cultures. The actual Puerto Princesa people are Cuyunons, Tagbanuas and Bataks. Each group has its own system of beliefs and culture. Tourists can find nearly three fourth of population residing on shores of the Puerto Princesa.
Predominantly, the city has two distinct seasons; from November to April, a dry season and from May to October, a wet season. February is recorded as the dry month, in which there won’t be any rains and September is recorded as the heavy rain fall season. Tourists can see coolest temperature in November, December, January and February. The temperature is comparatively high in the months like March, April and May.
The best time to visit Puerto Princesa is in April, May and June. Seas are usually calm in summer times and there were no typhoons recorded in summer days. Tough, humidity is pretty high, tourists can enjoy under the reasonable average temperature 27 degrees Celsius. The basic mode of transportation from other cities and countries to Puerto Princesa is by flight or by sea.
Numerous of inland resorts, island resorts, hotels, beach cottages and mountain resorts are available in and around the city for accommodation of tourists. Sightseeing places like Honda bay, White Sand Beaches and Scuba Diving and Subterranean River National Park offer great enjoyment to tourists.
Seafood is quite famous in Puerto Princesa. Rizal Avenue, Lacao Street and Manalo Street are extremely popular for right dining environment and business class restaurants. Tourists can find numerous of bars that serve wine in these streets.
Buses, cars, vans and taxis are available for internal city travel. Flights and boats are available to travel other islands and cities. So, transportation is smooth and convenient in Puerto Princesa.
Regular events like Feast of Immaculate Conception, Seafood Festival, Balayong Festival, Love Affair with Nature Festival, Pangalipay Sa Baybay, Karagatan Festival and City Fiesta attract numerous of tourists to Puerto Princesa.
